New blog!

I found the new blog Off the Court today. It's penned by Aussie Rebecca Leeks who describes herself as an activist and a socialist. And I like her. Well I like her blog which appears to be fairly new. There's this good post about how tennis player Caroline Wozniacki turned--in a very humorous and playful way--on the press after she was criticized for being boring in her press conferences. I have long waited for players who called the press on their inane questions. Wozniacki did it brilliantly without coming across as spiteful or arrogant. But the post that really made me feel like Leeks and I could be besties was this one: Australian Open Drinking Game . Highlights from the game: Take two drinks each time Kim Clijsters ’ child is mentioned Take five drinks when Jim Courier makes a sexist remark about his wife, someone else’s wife or one of the female players. ( I didn't know JC got married. So much for my theory that is gay. ) Have a drink when Andy Roddick touches h...

News-y things

I don't know what my problem is with finding things to blog about lately. But I am headed to s different country later this week so hopefully that will provide some information. It's not as if there has not been things going on. After all, the women's college world series is nearly upon us. I went to a regional game this past weekend and had a very enjoyable time. WPS is in full-swing. Though I have been a little bitter since the Abby Wambach suspension decision. But I am building a bridge and trying to get over it. So here are just some tidbits to tide--well, mostly me, over--until I find my blog-jo again. Lots and lots of Title IX stuff happening these days. With the recession has come a lot of cuts in sports programs and when cutting programs schools must consider from whom they are taking away opportunities. Also making news is the case being brought by the axed volleyball team at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. The volleyball players and coach are alleging that ...

Soccer stuff

New blog--ok just new to me--about soccer. Former coach Amanda Vandervort is the author of Soccer Science a blog that "look[s] at the soccer world from the personal perspective of Amanda Vandervort, a former college coach and fan of professional soccer, with an emphasis on the technologies that are revolutionizing the way we see the beautiful game." Vandervort has a Twitter account (is that what they are called?). This whole Twitter thing and the number of WPS players and sports bloggers who are Twittering makes me wonder if "ken" shouldn't be getting familiar with this. But I'm not sure I really need another distraction from my dissertation. [h/t to Sean from sportsBabel for sending me the link] Here's a local controversy--not local to me, but to someone. A youth soccer coach has resigned after sending an interesting email to the parents of 6- and 7-year old female soccer players in a club league in Massachusetts. There are a lot--a lot!--of comments o...

New blog in town

Just got word that there's a new blog on sport philosophy called, appropriately enough, Sport Philosophy. It's being authored by Brian Wigley of Shenandoah University. Just one post so far about the perceptions of opponents as enemies. Could be a good blog. I will wait just a bit before I add it to the blogroll (sorry, Brian) to see if it addresses issues of gender in sport.

More new blogs

So I found Because I Played Sports the other day and was pleased. And now I keep finding more blogs that I never knew about. First, there's Women Like Sports . Blogger Apryl Delancey blogs about her own fandom. Unfortunately from what I have seen she blogs mostly about men's sports. Though Delancey does appear to be a regular reader of Because I Played Sports and links to the blog and highlights the stories there. Then there's Girls Dig Sports . It's a little slicker looking than most of the blogs on women's sports and, again, the content seems to be focused on men's sports. So these two will not make it on the blogroll just yet. I really hope both cover more women's sports, because it would be pretty disappointing if when we talk about women liking sports, we're only talking about men's sports. A little more to my liking is Women Play Sports , though it has not been updated since the beginning of September. Hopefully Dr. Oh No Romo will get back on ...

New (to me) blog

Check out Because I Played Sports , I blog I recently found (via Women's Sports Blog). Because I Played, run by former b-baller Megan Hueter , attempts to fill some of the void on the internet about women's sports. She has some of my favorite blogs on her blogroll. Unfortunately this one is not one them, but maybe someday my little blog will be up there, too. Tomorrow (or some time in the near future) I will comment on a story Because I Played has been following about a female placekicker on a GA high school football team.
